William Basinski

William Basinski is a musician, composer, auteur who has worked in experimental media for over twenty years in NYC, expanding the boundaries of the aural landscape. A classically trained clarinetist, he studied jazz saxophone and composition at North Texas State University in the late 70s. In 1978, inspired by minimalists such as Steve Reich and Brian Eno, he began developing his own vocabulary using tape loops and old reel to reel tape decks. He developed his meditative, melancholy style experimenting with short looped melodies played against themselves creating feedback loops. His early studies with piano and tape, from 1980-82, Variations: A Movement in Chrome Primitive, is scheduled for release for the first time on David Tibet's London label, Durtro in September 2003.

In 1982, he began experimenting with pulling sound from the airwaves. By sampling short melodies from Muzak radio onto tape loops of varying lengths, slowing them down, and mixing them together with a symphony of shortwave radio static in real time, he created his Shortwave Music series. A selection of these pieces was released to critical acclaim in 1998 by Carsten Nicolai's German avant-garde label, Noton. The culmination of these studies, the 1983 masterwork, The River, a 90-minute "music of the spheres" was released on Raster-Noton in Dec 2002. Using current available cheap technology, Basinski created an "instant" 90 minute video for The River, by running the music through the audio-visualizer program, ArKaos that came with his Apple Powerbook, videotaping the animation off the screen and editing in I-movie. This was shown at Voxxx Galerie in Chemnitz, Germany (home of raster-noton) from May 26-June 17,2002 to launch the release of the 2 CD box set.

Basinski's Watermusic, was released on his own label, 2062, in February 2001. A 60-minute, tranquil, shimmering ambient piece created on the Voyetra Synthesizer over a period of months spanning the turn of the century, Watermusic has received critical acclaim and is available through distributors in America, Europe and Japan. His new pieces, The Disintegration Loops, were created in August 2001. In the process of archiving and digitizing old loops, Basinski discovered a group of bucolic loops that began to disintegrate during the recording process. These pieces seem to portray the life and death of the American pastoral landscape. The 6 pieces are being released in sequence on 4 CDs, starting in June 2002. As of April 2003, Disintegration Loops 1 and 2 have been released to rave reviews as well as Watermusic II, and a compilation of loop pieces from the early eighties, Melancholia. 2062's releases are available through DIE STADT, FORCED EXPOSURE and various other international distributors as well as through his website, MMLXII.com. A 63 minute video with Disintegration Loop 1.1 had its world premiere at the 2002 Rotterdam International Film Festival. It consists of one static shot of lower Manhattan shot from his roof in Brooklyn on the evening of September 11th, 2001, as that fateful day turned to night. His latest collaboration with artist, James Elaine, a thirty minute ambient film study Variations, was previewed at Tribeca Temporary Gallery in November 2001 and its world premiere at Rotterdam. These two films are currently touring the festival circuit. Variations will be released as a special DVD edition by IDEA RECORDS in fall 2003. Another very early tape loop piece from 1979, A Red Score in Tile, was released on Christoph Heeman's 3 Poplars in limited edition LP and CD in May 2003 and is distributed by DIE STADT, Germany. Keep an ear out for Basinski's new hour-long monthly web-radio show, The Slipstream on wps1.org debuting in September 2003.

Women Take Back The Noise

Women Take Back the Noise is a massive three CD compilation featuring 53 tracks from 47 female musicians, sound artists and noisemakers. Curated by Ninah Pixie, this project was three years in the making. Noise has traditionally been viewed as a rather male-dominated genre – although in this regard one could say that it merely mirrors the music business, or indeed society as a whole – and this compilation attempts to give voice to those women making making music/art in this area. Most of the names here are unfamiliar, although there are a few better-known artists such as TG’s Cosey Fanni Tutti and Blevin Blectum included, alongside newer up-and-coming acts such as Experiment Haywire.
The discs have been carefully sequenced and compiled to provide a cohesive listening experience, and are themed into three volumes: Orgonauta, Scheherazade and Vociferous. The first disc is fairly dreamy and ambient, and the music gets increasingly noisy and intense as you work your way through to disc three. The closest thing I’ve heard to this previously would be Virgin’s Ambient 4: Isolationism compilation from the ’90s.
Highlights include ‘Wired’ By Cosey Fanni Tutti, which features thick droning feedback guitar over lugubrious beats; the eerie, 3D occult noise loops of ‘Current’s by Choronzon; and the turgid, menacing atmosphere of ‘Lucid Interval’ by Wisteriax.
Special mention must also be made of the packaging. Instead of a standard booklet, the liner notes are presented on a couple of dozen postcards, with photos and weblinks for every artist. The three CDs, postcards and stickers come in a hand-assembled plastic sleeve with special circuit-bent noisemaker included – now if that isn’t inviting you to take the noise into your own hands, I don’t know what is…

Anti Ittna Haapapuro

Projects: Aeoga, Arktau Aon, Arktau Eos, Aural Holograms, Dolorian, Halo Manash, I.Corax

AEOGA one of the other musical Project of Anti Ittna, based in Northern Finland, which began in 2004 as a way to exaust mind and body in order to obtain a condition of non-consciousness and to receive, realize and to create material based on both primal and absent vision. To walk AEOGA's path, it's to float in an immerse cosmic sea bathed in shadow figures and black holes devouring themselves all the time…

“Coav” was unleashed in July 2004,stimulating,penetrating,fractal explorations of dark trance-inducing drones focusing into ritualistic-tribal ambient with predomiant emphasis on dissonant abstractions and incredible work of subliminal chants, spoken passages floating behinds dense atmospheres created through 8 chapters developed here in “Coav”. Thin bell sounds and percussive elements marching together at moments arriving to a maximum level of reality in which AEOGA's is as a key to enter undefined magickal space where each enigmatic explorations of man converges. In our opinion Anti Ittna,is one of the best exponents of ritualistic art expressed through sounds, visuals and magickal atavisms. Cover shows us an automatic drawing shape similar to the work of British magician and artist Austin Osman Spare, an abstract reality revealed through “Coav”. And Cd comes in a 3 panel matte paper sleeve placed between two matte black squares. There is a small piece of knotted rope stapled to the front square, which rest in a diagonal side, suits in the larger backing piece. Limited to just 1.000 copies. There is a world that reveals itself slowly behinds 8 chapters through these explorations and is where the strength, essence of Coav is.

“Zenith Beyond The Helix Locus” was evoked in Oct 2005 presents a somber collection of 15 desolated movements, exploring ancient cosmic dimensions and blacken atmospheres of cold-blood red emotion, with enigmatic ritualistic enviroments; tonal soundscapes open doorways to a lull of trance inducing instrumentation. To experience this surreal dimension of AEOGA is to explore minimalistic ambience and evocative instrumentations centered in complex and dynamic atmospheres. The whole compositions are dense ethereal and somber with orational invocations which emerges suddenly provoking a state of gnosis, due the in deep unlimited sonic mantras, developed by AEOGA.this album is brilliant, perfect in the sense of vacuity and penetration we experience when working with such musical expressionism, altered forms of consciousness evoked beyond the Red Zenith Votex, purple seas weaving are the realities we perceive when hearing and visualizing AEOGA. More than just music AEOGA is a perfect mutation of self-illumination through dissolution. ©

Michael Prime

Michael Prime presents himself as a sound ecologist, a title that describes his two passions: music and life. Active on the avant-garde music scene since 1985, he gained a solid reputation playing in electronic ensembles like Morphogenesis and Organum. Prime studied ecology and worked in that field for many years, conserving wildlife habitats in South London. This work led to the development of techniques used to translate environmental and organic sound sources into music. He co-founded the live electronic improvisation group Morphogenesis in 1985 with Roger Sutherland, Adam Bohman, Ron Briefel, Clive Hall, and Fred Sansom and released a string of records with them on Streamline, Paradigm, Vintage Electronic Records, and his own label Mycophile. In 1988, he started performing with the group Organum and released with them a 7" for Les Disques du Soleil et de l'Acier in 1989 and a string of CDs in the 1990s. He has collaborated with such avant-garde luminaries as Jim O'Rourke and Eddie Prevost and formed the group Negative Entropy in 1997 with Geert Feytons of Noise-Makers Fifes.

Michael Prime's art is mostly focused on letting the listener hear sounds that surround him but of which he remains unaware. This goes from the choice of environments in which he performs (caves, railroad tunnels, forests) to the type of sound sources he uses. On his 1998 CD Domestic Science he manipulated sounds from household appliances like a refrigerator and a washing machine. But his most influential album is the 2000 release L-Fields on which he ingeniously uses bioelectric recordings of hallucinogenic plants to create haunting electro-acoustic works. He developed a technique allowing him to interact with plants, translating variations in their bioelectrical field into sound produced by an oscillator. He performed live with plants on numerous occasions.
