Guy Marc Hinant’s Anthology of Noise & Electronic Music is an important collection, an extremely valuable contribution to the recorded history of electronic music. I appreciate that he does not limit his selections to the “non-commercial,” as so much interesting work has been, and is being, done by musicians who more often appear at clubs than concert halls, or at festivals rather than conferences. Some of the early rareties are revelations, and the aesthetic connections between all these “noisy,” “revolutionary” musicians are at least thought-provoking even if you do not completely agree with the choices or parallels. It is important that a stance is taken, and defended (the Sub Rosa label itself exemplifies this approach, with its eclectic catalogue of experimental music of various kinds). The liner notes not only introduce each artist and track but also include historical, polemical interludes.
